The Church at Milledgeville Statement of Belief
Scripture
We believe the Scriptures are true, authoritative and sufficient.
(Psalm 19:7-11; 2 Timothy 3:16-17; Hebrews 4:12; 2 Peter 1:20-21)
God
We believe there is only one God who is eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
(Genesis 1:26; Deuteronomy 6:4; Psalm 110:1; Isaiah 46:9-10; Matthew 3:13-17; John 14:16-17, 26; John 17:3; 1 Corinthians 8:4-6; 1 Corinthians 12:4-6)
Humanity
We believe God created humans in His image to worship Him and give Him glory.
We believe that all humanity (Christ excluded), by birth and action, is sinful.
We believe the deserved penalty for sin is death, both physical and spiritual.
(Genesis 1:26–27; Genesis 9:6; Isaiah 43:7; Psalm 96:9; Matthew 4:10; Galatians 3:28; Genesis 6:5; Psalm 51:5; Jeremiah 17:9; Romans 3:23; Romans 5:12-21; Romans 7:18; Ephesians 2:1-3; Genesis 2:15-17; Genesis 3:19; Romans 5:12; Romans 6:23; James 1:14-15)
Jesus
We believe Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, was born of a virgin, and is both fully God and fully human.
We believe Jesus Christ died as the substitute to pay the penalty for sin.
We believe Jesus Christ physically rose from the dead.
We believe Jesus Christ physically ascended into heaven.
We believe there will be a future personal, bodily return of the Lord Jesus Christ to the earth to judge and establish His eternal kingdom and to consummate and fulfill all His purposes, the works of creation, and redemption, with eternal reward for believers and eternal punishment for the unsaved.
(Matthew 1:20; Luke 2:52; John 1:1-4, 14; Philippians 2:6-7; Colossians 1:15-20; Hebrews 1:1-3; Hebrews 4:14-16; Isaiah 53; John 1:29; John 10:7-11; Romans 5:8; 1 Corinthians 15:1-4; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Galatians 1:4; 1 Peter 3:18; Matthew 28:1-20; Mark 16:1-8; Luke 24:1-53; John 21:1-14; 1 Corinthians 15:12-34; John 14:3; Acts 1:9-11; Luke 24:50-51; Matthew 25:31-46; John 5:28-29; Acts 24:15; 1 Thessalonians 4:16; 1 John 3:2; Revelation 1:7)
Salvation
We believe that only by trusting in the person and work of Jesus Christ alone can one be reconciled to God and experience true life and joy.
(Mark 1:15; John 3:16-18; John 14:6; Acts 4:12; Romans 3:21-26; Romans 10:9-10; 1 Timothy 2:5-6; Ephesians 2:4-10)
Sacraments
We believe that, in following Christ’s example and command, all believers ought to be baptized. We believe that baptism is an outward expression of inward change and is thus reserved for those who have trusted in Christ.
We believe that, like baptism, observation of the Lord’s Supper is reserved for believers and ought to be taken regularly in remembrance of our Savior.
(Matthew 3:13-17; Matthew 28:19; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26)
Church
We believe the church is the body of Christ on earth of which Jesus is the Head and whose members are those who have truly received Christ by faith. The local church is a tangible expression of the body of Christ in a particular location.
(1 Corinthians 12:12–31; Ephesians 4:11–16; Colossians 1:18–20; Colossians 3:12–25; 1 Peter 2:9; Hebrews 10:24–25)
Mission
We believe God cares about the needs of all people, and the church, as Christ’s body, is to show His love and care for others. Every member of the church is sent out by Jesus as a minister of the gospel, declaring the love of Christ with their lips and demonstrating the love of Christ with their lives—not only in their communities but also to the farthest and most unreached places of the world.
(Isaiah 49:6; Matthew 28:18–20; Romans 10:13–15; 1 Timothy 2:3–4; Acts 1:8)
